Voice 2001
Voice was commissioned by the State Library of Tasmania (now Libraries Tasmania). The aim was to enhance the visitor experience in the foyer of the headquarters building at 91 Murray Street Hobart, reflect the aims of the library, and 'disguise' a dominant structural column in the space. Voice consists of a tower of coverless books wedged between stainless steel 'bookends' which are covered in lists of verbs associated with the transformative powers of books and reading. It extends into the ceiling, suggesting that the column of books and verbs runs into the floors above.
Voice was decommissioned in 2024 when the foyer of the library underwent a major renovation.
