ON THE ROAD
from San Fransisco to Istanbul
A blog about my journey from San Francisco to Istanbul – and then back home to Hobart, Tasmania. In 2013 I travelled across the USA by train to take up a 3 month Australia Council Residency in New York. I used the residency as a base to explore some of the great libraries of America, and to develop new work about our changing relationship to the book, the word and the library. The final 3 months of the trip were spent in London, Latvia, Venice, Greece and Turkey.
Supported by a new work grant from the Australia Council for the Arts and study leave from the University of Tasmania. The result was the installation, The Secretary, shown at SASA Gallery Adelaide in 2014, and Lake Macquarie Art Gallery in 2017.
A travel diary begun in 2008 that records part of my attempt to follow my mother's escape from Latvia at the end of WWII. In Europe, the Journey took me through Latvia and then to Russia, Poland, Germany and Italy. In Australia, it took me to Bonegilla, to the largest post WWII migrant camp in Australia.
The project was supported by the 2008 Inaugural Qantas Contemporary Art Award and resulted in the exhibition Celojums (The Journey), which was shown in the National Library of Latvia in 2010.

The thesis was an exhibition of 8 interconnected installations that offered the viewer the possibility of developing new narratives about the relationships between language, knowledge and subjectivity. Awarded a Dean's commendation for excellence.
